U.S. Taxes

There are two types of income taxes:

1. Federal: Federal income tax is paid to the U.S. government.

2. State: State income tax is paid to the State of California/Massachusetts.

Tax Filing Requirements

What do you have to do

All F-1 and J-1 students and scholars, and their F-2 and J-2 dependents who were present in the U.S. (even if for only one day) in calendar year 2023 are . You are still required to file Form 8843 even if you did not earn any income in the U.S. You do not need to have a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to submit Form 8843.
