There are two types of income taxes:

1. Federal: Federal income tax is paid to the U.S. government.

2. State: State income tax is paid to the State of California/Massachusetts.

Tax Filing Requirements

What do you have to do

All F-1 and J-1 students and scholars, and their F-2 and J-2 dependents who were present in the U.S. (even if for only one day) in calendar year 2023 are required to file Form 8843. You are still required to file Form 8843 even if you did not earn any income in the U.S. You do not need to have a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to submit Form 8843.

Relevant tax document

  • W-2 - Wage and Tax Statement (completed by employer)

  • W-4 - Employee's Withholding Certificate (completed by you, for your employer)

  • I-9 - Employment Eligibility Verification (completed by employer)
